ORGANIZE YOUR BUILDING!
The Uptown Housing Working Group's Tenant Organizing campaign is underway with the support of the NYC-DSA Bronx/Upper Manhattan Branch.
We will be holding a "Train the Trainers" event where YOU can learn basic skills in interpreting rent histories, rent laws, rent stabilization, tenant organizing, and, of course, your rights as renters.
Anyone who is interested in learning these skills to pass on to your neighbors, roommates, other DSA members, or outside organizations (let us know!) is welcome!
Bonus points if you can attend a second training in a few weeks for the larger DSA membership—stay tuned.
No prerequisites, but we do ask that you obtain your unit's rent history; the more examples we have to review, the better equipped we are to help our comrades!
Here's how (from the HCR website):
1)You can access your rent history by email, to firstname.lastname@example.org . The rent history will be printed and mailed directly to the apartment/building address.
2) OR Call the Rent Infoline at 718-739-6400. The rent history will be printed and mailed directly to the apartment/building address.
3) OR Visit a Borough/District Rent Office in person (Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Office Building, 163 West 125th St, 5th Floor for Manhattan residents or the DHCR office at1 Fordham Plaza for BX residents). When visiting, please bring proof of identity (photo ID) and proof of tenancy (copy of lease, rent receipt or utility bill). You will be required to complete an Access to Records form and the rent history will be printed and given to you at the office.
