Should The Left Want A Constitution Convention?

A Panel on November's Referendum

Suggested Donation $10 to the DSA Political Committe via Action Network

The New York State Constitution mandates a statewide vote every twenty years on whether to hold a Constitutional Convention (“Con Con”) to amend the State Constitution. The next vote is scheduled on November 7, 2017. If the Con Con is approved, delegates to the Con Con would be elected in 2018.

There is not yet consensus among DSA and its allies regarding the Convention. We will convene a panel on the issue, with a discussion that addresses:

  • the history and process of the Constitutional Convention

  • the risks and benefits of a Con Con for the left

  • how, if a Con Con does pass, DSA should consider engaging with the process to maximize positive change

Pro Con Con :

  • Ross Barkan, Village Voice

  • Jasmine Cook, New York People’s Convention

  • Ken Sherrill, CUNY Political Science, Emeritus

Anti Con Con:

  • John O’Malley, CWA

  • Ari Paul, Journalist, PSC

  • Susan Welber, Legal Aid Society

  • Renée Paradis

Please RSVP here via Eventbrite, and consider making a $10 suggested donation to DSA's Political Committee on Action Network. Seating is limited and on a first come first serve basis.
