Last Thursday, the landlord colluded with the City to evict 85 Bowery's tenants, many of whom are elderly and children. This comes only weeks after state agency DHCR ruled that the buildings be rent stabilized.
Over a year ago, the housing court had ordered the landlord to make necessary repairs to the building. Since then, the landlord has done nothing, and HPD has not bothered to enforce the court order. However, on Thursday when the landlord pushed to kick out the tenants, the City agencies acted seamlessly and swiftly: within two hours, the tenants of more than a dozen families were forced out of their homes and into the cold.
Join us this Wednesday to hold HPD accountable for the work they should have been doing a long time ago to fix the buildings! Demand HPD to perform the repairs properly within the official time limit of two weeks, and make sure the tenants return to their homes and normal lives as soon as possible!
