The term “reproductive justice” was created by black women activists at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, coordinated by the United Nations. It refers to an understanding of reproductive rights and activism that goes beyond “abortion rights” and the language of “choice” in favor of a holistic understanding of human rights. SisterSong defines the term as “three interconnected human rights values: the right not to have children using safe birth control, abortion, or abstinence; the right to have children under the conditions we choose; and the right to parent the children we have in safe and healthy environments.”

The reproductive justice paradigm takes into account the impact of oppressions such as class, gender, race, sexuality, and citizenship status, all of which influence one's reproductive freedom. We will discuss the history of medical and sterilization abuse, the predominance of abortion in the pro-choice movement, welfare, connections between parenthood and class privilege, environmental justice, LGBTQ rights, and birth justice.
