As many of you have heard by now, Amazon has announced it will build a new headquarters in Long Island City, with giveaways from the state and city reaching up to $3 billion. Meanwhile subway service degrades, schools are overcrowded, and rents keep going up. With Amazon's move, we can only expect things to get worse, as landlords and the city have new incentives to push working people out. It's sickening that profitable companies are able to extract billions from our government, and it’s particularly galling in the case of Amazon, a company with a well known anti-government and anti-worker record and helmed by Jeff Bezos, the wealthiest person on the planet.
For this meeting we’ll hear from a variety of speakers inside and outside DSA on the different reasons why Amazon must be resisted, whether it’s collaborating with ICE, union-busting, or generally being hostile to any kind of public authority. Breaking into discussion groups, we’ll strategize on the ways Tech Action can mobilize tech workers against Amazon and for the things we really need in our city. Finally, we’ll do a roundup of what NYC-DSA and other groups are planning against Amazon HQ2 – canvasing, petitioning, flyering, phone-banking, rallying, opposition researching, and more – and be sure to plug everyone into those actions.
We know December’s a busy time, but this is shaping up to be big, chapter-wide fight and as DSA-ers in tech and interested in tech we certainly have an important role to play in this. See you on the 4th!
