Queens DSA’s monthly membership meeting will focus on whether NYC-DSA should endorse Cynthia Nixon for Governor or Jumaane Williams for Lieutenant Governor (or both) in the Democratic Primary on September 13, and if so, how to get involved. The meeting will be on Thursday, July 26, 7-9 PM at 37-62 89 St. in Elmhurst, near the 90 St. stop on the 7 train.
This meeting is the third step in an endorsement process:
- Step 1: Both candidates submitted a candidate questionnaire and also spoke and answered questions at a July 10 membership meeting in Manhattan. This meeting was also live-streamed. The candidate questionnaires and link to the livestream were distributed to all NYC-DSA members via email.
- Step 2: All members in NYC-DSA were sent an email ballot asking whether NYC-DSA should endorse either candidate, or both, and if so, whether to make a limited or active effort on their behalf. Here are the results of this advisory ballot.
- Step 3: Each of the six geographic branches is voting whether to recommend that NYC-DSA endorse the candidates and how actively to support them if we do. All Queens members who attend the July 26 meeting may vote. At least 60% of members present must vote in favor for the branch to recommend an endorsement. All abstentions will therefore count as a vote against.
- Step 4: If at least three of the six branches vote in favor of endorsing either or both candidates, the Citywide Leadership Council will make the final endorsement vote at a special meeting in early August. The CLC is NYC-DSA’s highest decision-making body between annual conventions; it includes five officers elected at the convention and representatives from each branch, weighted by branch size.
