The NYC Grievance Committee invites you to join us for a restorative justice training. Members will gain skills to mediate conflict and foster positive community building. We hope members will join the Mediation Collective after this training, but also welcome members who are looking to learn and might bring their knowledge back to their branches or working groups.

While NYC-DSA has a Grievance Committee, we formed the Mediation Collective with the recognition that investigating grievances and administering punishments can fall short of our goals as abolitionists in an organization that is committed to abolition. We launched a Mediation Collective to facilitate conversations between members, and to guide members who have been harmed through conversation meant to help restore relationships.

We recognize that a lot of work must be done to address harm and facilitate healing processes among ourselves, in order to be an organization that embraces restorative justice— to repair harm instead of punishing or isolating those of us who have harmed. We also hope that by addressing conflicts early, we can avoid many grievances. Finally, we aim to foster positive community building, with the understanding that there must be a community worth restoring to implement restorative justice.

We are hosting the training on two days to accommodate different schedules. If this sounds good to you, we hope you join us on the 16th (in Manhattan) or the 18th (in Brooklyn) to work towards achieving a model for justice within our organization while we fight for it in our campaigns and our projects.
