NBK Night School Session 16 — Education is a Right

  • Mayday Space 176 Saint Nicholas Avenue Brooklyn, NY, 11237 United States (map)

From Bernie Sanders’s demand for Free College, approved by a whopping 60% of Americans, to teachers walking out nationwide in “the biggest year of worker protest in a generation” to demand better conditions and a halt to privatization, the politics of education is front and center today. No better place than the Night School to talk about these developments! In this session we look at what socialists mean when they say education is a vital public good; we analyze the forces that have been trying to reorient education toward market imperatives; we learn about the ways that people are fighting back. Along the way, we discuss socialist demands and programs, near-term and long-term, for creating a free and just education available to all, and how to achieve them.
